An order for a hundred electric trucks is not uncommon. The large logistics company transferred one of a hundred units of the FM Electric to the Swedish truck manufacturer this week. The Volvo FM Electric has a gross vehicle weight of up to 44 tonnes and a range of up to 300 kilometers. This is probably one of the largest commercial orders ever for heavy electric trucks worldwide.

The listed DFDS provides ferry and transport services in and around Europe. DFDS is active in more than twenty countries and employs approximately 10,000 people. Volvo Trucks and DFDS already announced a far-reaching collaboration last summer. The Volvo factory near Gothenburg would be supplied by DFDS with a Volvo FM Electric on a trial basis. The electric truck delivered parts to the factory over a four-month period via a daily route of approximately 120 kilometers.

Viable Solution

Subsequently, DFDS is now ordering one hundred units of the FM Electric. Financing also went through Volvo, at Volvo Financial Services. DFDS will deploy the electric trucks throughout Europe for transport on both short- and long-haul services.

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks: “Together we show the world that electrified heavy truck transport is already a viable solution today. I think this will encourage many more customers to confidently take the first step in their own electrification journey .”

Market share forty percent

Several hundred heavy electric trucks have been registered across Europe this year, according to Volvo Trucks. About 40 percent of this comes from Volvo Trucks. The truck manufacturer expects to be able to deliver the first units of the order from DFDS probably by the end of next year. This means that the truck manufacturer will probably also have a large market share in this segment next year. The remaining trucks for DFDS are expected to be delivered in 2023.

Six different models in production

With the FH, FM and FMX, Volvo Trucks introduced three new heavy-duty electric trucks last year. Since Volvo Trucks already has three different medium-duty electric trucks in its range, the electric line-up now consists of six models ranging from 16 to 44 tons. The Volvo FL Electric and FE Electric have been in production since 2019. Production of the FH, FM and FMX will start in the second half of 2022.

“Our clear goal is to drive the transformation of electric trucks and our market-leading position shows that we are definitely on the right track,” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. “Our goal by 2030 is for half of our global truck deliveries to be electric. We are pleased that the growing interest from our customers is gradually translating into firm orders, not least because of this impressive order from DFDS.”

To upload

Nothing has been disclosed about the charging concept for DFDS’ electric fleet, which now consists of more than a hundred trucks. But last summer, Niklas Andersson, Executive Vice President of DFDS’ logistics division, said: “We understand that load capacity is important. The experience with Volvo Trucks will be of value to us in building an overarching system, as we can concretely evaluate the battery capacity of vehicles based on routes and individual tasks.”
